Friday October 12, 2018, 7:30 PM

Mozart: Trio in E flat Major, K 498 “Kegelstat” (clarinet, viola, piano)

J. C. Bach: Piano Quartet in G Major, WB 66

Mozart/Schwencke: Grand Quintetto (‘Gran Partita’)

Mozart’s Serenade no. 10 in B flat major (Gran Partita) was a groundbreaking work, drastically expanding the boundaries of wind band music. Arranged for piano quintet by Mozart’s contemporary, this masterpiece closes the program that includes the first piece ever written for clarinet, viola, and piano. Featuring: Dr. Mario Aschauer, Assistant Professor of Musicology at Sam Houston State University, on fortepiano.

Saturday, January 26, 2019, 7:30 pm

Fasch: Concerto for Flute, Oboe, strings and basso continuo in G Major

Farina: Capriccio Stravagante

Graupner: Overture in B flat major for chalumeau and strings, GWV 484

Telemann: “Grillen-Symphonie” TWV 50:1

Join us as we examine some of the earliest surviving examples of imitation in music of other sounds and how they influenced later works by other composers. In Carlo Farina’s Capriccio Stravagante, the strings imitate chickens, cats, dogs, trumpets, and guitars, among others! At the end of the program, you’ll hear listen to crickets chirping— in Telemann’s “Cricket” Symphony! The Fasch concerto and Graupner overture showcase the virtuosic capabilities of La Speranza’s woodwind musicians. Andrew Schneider returns on harpsichord. (Image credit: Unknown)

Friday, March 22, 2019, 7:30 pm

Johann Nepomuk Fuchs: Trio for clarinet, viola, cello in D major

Mozart: String Quartet no. 1 in G Major

Richter: String Quartet B flat major Op. 5 no. 2

Backofen: Quintet for basset horn and strings in F Major

This program juxtaposes the early quartets of Mozart and the recently rediscovered Franz Xaver Richter. Fuchs, a little known Classical-era composer (not to be confused with the Romantic composer with the same name) writes charmingly for the unusual combination of clarinet, viola, and cello, and the performance is rounded out by one of the more demanding pieces of chamber music for basset horn.

Friday June 7, 2019, 7:30 pm

Schubert String Quartet no. 6 in D Major, D74

Schubert: Erlkonig arr. for string quartet by Eugene Gruenberg

Schumann: Abendlied arr. for clarinet and string quartet by Feruccio Busoni

Weber: Clarinet Quintet, Op. 34

Our season finale features the venture into art song in the early Romantic era with works by three of the period’s most influential composers. In a quartet that Franz Schubert wrote when he was 16, listen for the hints of the expertly written art songs to follow, such as the famous “Erlkonig”. This not-to-miss concert closes with the stunning virtuosity showcased in Carl Maria von Weber’s Quintet for clarinet and strings.
