Unbridled Elegance

La Speranza’s second consecutive appearance at the Houston Early Music Festival features works for fortepiano and strings by Mozart, Haydn, and Forster. From Mozart’s stormy Quartet in g minor to Haydn’s delightfully refined E flat major Trio, this concert explores a wide range of musical imagery by two of the most well-known composers of the Classical era. On the other hand, Emmanuel Aloys Forster, friend and esteemed colleague of Mozart, Beethoven and Haydn, wrote incredible works of chamber music for the fortepiano which have been largely overlooked- until now. Discover his stunning C Major piano quartet in its US debut.

From the Early 70’s

In this program, we celebrate the contrasts and similarities between works that were written between 1772-1774. Haydn’s stormy f minor string quartet is contrasted with Mozart’s cheery F Major string quartet. These quartets were both written at the same time as Spanish composer’s Gaetano Brunetti’s hopeful String Quartet Op. 2 no. 3.

Wordless drama

La Speranza’s third season comes to a close featuring a septet by Romantic composer Adolph Blanc with the same instrumentation as Beethoven’s Septet – clarinet, horn, bassoon, violin, viola, cello, and double bass. Blanc’s septet tells a thrilling tale that scales the depths and heights of Romantic-era musical expression- all without words.
